Legend Associated with Holi Celebrations

As per the legends, there was a demon king named Hiranyakashyap, who was loathed by his Vishnu Bhakta son, Prahalada. So, he planned to kill his own son. Hiranyakashyap’s sister Holika wore a cloak that made her immune to burning and sat with Prahalada in a pyre. But to everyone’s surprise, Holika burned to death while Prahalada came out of the same fire unharmed. Therefore, to commemorate this day, people across the country burn huge bonfires on the eve of Holi. This day also marks the victory of good over evil.

There is another popular legend of Radha and Krishna related to Holi that holds special significance in the regions surrounding Braj. In these areas, this festival is popular as Rang Panchami and celebrates the divine love of Radha and Krishna. According to the legends, Lord Krishna turned dark in color after demon Putana poisoned him with her breast’s milk. This is why, people apply different colors on their faces and many of them also celebrate Lathmar Holi on this day, in which the women of the house playfully beat their husband’s and brothers-in-law for their mischievous behavior.

Holi and Vedic Importance

In Vedic Astrology, Holi holds a special place as it is believed that a person can get rid of negative energies if they offer prayers to Lord Hanuman. To cast away negativities, one may visit any Hanuman temple and offer Jaggery and black thread. In addition to this, you can increase the positive impact manifold by reciting the mantra “Om Hanumate Namah/ ओम् हनुमन्ते नमह्” and wearing a black thread. You may also free yourself from negative vibes by placing it on the main door of your house.

There are different characteristics associated with each zodiac sign, and based on these features, we will tell you how the natives of each zodiac sign will celebrate the festival of colors this year!

Holika Dahan Celebrations

A night before Holi, Holika Dahan is celebrated where people organise a bonfire that signifies the pyre on which Prahlad sat with Holika, and came out of it unhurt.  On this pyre, people keep certain toys made of cow dung, and small figures that represent Prahlad and Holika are placed at the top of that pyre. Once the fire is lit, people quickly remove Prahlad’s figure to recreate the story where Prahlad was saved from the fire due to his devotion to Lord Vishnu. It marks the victory of good over evil and makes people understand the power of true faith.

People throw Samagri in the same pyre. This Samagri consists of items with cleansing and antibiotic properties, which helps keep the environment healthy.
